Buying guide: pool water testing kits
You cannot dose accurately without a volume figure and a test. This guide compares kit types without inventing prices, ratings or retailer IDs.

A testing kit is the one pool product that pays for itself in unused chemicals. Pair it with a known volume from the calculator so every dose matches the label.
What you should be able to measure
- pH — target typically around 7.2–7.6 for chlorine pools.
- Free chlorine (or bromine, if that is your sanitiser).
- Total alkalinity, which buffers pH swings.
- Optionally cyanuric acid (stabiliser) for outdoor chlorine pools, and salt for salt-chlorinator systems.
Strips, drops or digital?
Test strips are fast and cheap to run. Dip, wait the printed seconds, and compare the pad to the chart in daylight — not under a yellow patio bulb. They are good for a daily glance; they are less precise for chlorine at the low end.
Drop (liquid reagent) kits take a few minutes and a measured water sample. Colour changes are easier to judge in a comparator block, and they remain the standard for people who shock or balance water after a party.
Digital testers remove the colour-matching step. They need calibration solution and clean electrodes. They suit owners who already test often enough to keep the probe wet and calibrated.
How volume changes the kit you buy
Kit size is about how many tests you get, not the size of the pool. A 48,000-litre family pool still uses one 10 ml sample. What does change with volume is the chemical dose once the result is in — which is why this site exists. Read maintenance basics after you have a litre figure.
